I met Kathy O’Hara back in May of 1996 during a most difficult time in my life. The home that we had bought in Lake Forest we could no longer afford due to my husband’s lack of employment. We had lived there 6 years yet the last year had been a constant struggle to make our mortgage payments each month. After using up all savings and hope of turning the situation around, we met with our accountant and took his advice filing legal documents to initiate bankruptcy proceedings. Kathy came into the picture when I received her call representing the lender. She was calling to negotiate the terms and a date for us to vacate the property and turn our home back over to the bank. Of course we arranged the terms; there were no other options.
When Kathy arrived at my door, it was all I could do to contain the sorrow that I felt and utter sense of failure. I remember crying as I signed the paperwork still struggling with the fact that our dreams had come to this end; but more important than the sadness I felt that day, was the level of compassion that Kathy showed during her visit. As we finished signing the paperwork, she looked at me and put her arm around my shoulders assuring me that it would be OK. Something that was hard at that moment to believe. She then told us to look her up in 2 years when we were ready to find another home (and finances had improved) and she would help us, and with that she handed me her card. Those words and her business card were carefully tucked away as we finished packing and moved out of our home. Kathy had provided a ray of hope and genuine level of caring at such a vulnerable time in my life; this was something that I would not forget.
